Born in Gainesville, Texas in 1938, Steagall first gained recognition in the 1960s and ’70s as a country music songwriter, penning hits for stars like Ray Charles, Johnny Duncan, and most notably “Amanda” for Don Williams (and later recorded by Waylon Jennings). His own recording career took off in the mid-1970s, blending traditional country with Western themes, and he scored several charting singles, including “Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music”a tribute to Texas swing and honky-tonk heritage. Beyond music, Red Steagall has become one of the most respected voices in Western storytelling and cowboy poetry.
