## The Janitor With a Dream
Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and an Army Ranger pilot who threw away a promising military career and alienated his family to move to Nashville and become a songwriter. Penniless, he swept floors as a janitor at Columbia Recording Studios. While sweeping, he watched Johnny Cash record, desperately wanting the Man in Black to hear his songs, but Cash routinely ignored the tapes Kristofferson handed to his wife, June.
## A Reckless Stunt
Out of patience and money, Kristofferson decided on a wildly reckless plan. Using his military aviation training, he rented a National Guard helicopter, flew it directly over Johnny Cash’s sprawling property, and landed it squarely on Cash’s front lawn. Legend claims Kristofferson stepped out with a beer in one hand and a demo tape in the other.
## A Legendary Hit is Born
Cash, impressed by the pure audacity of the stunt, finally listened to the tape. The song was ‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,’ a gritty, poetic masterpiece about a brutal hangover and crippling loneliness. Cash loved it, recorded it, and even fought television executives who wanted him to change the word ‘stoned’ during a live broadcast. The helicopter stunt successfully launched Kristofferson’s legendary career.
